Zignago Vetro places at the heart of its business strategy and culture, respect for the environment and the protection of the ecosystem. With this in mind the company has put into action a number of tangible measures aimed at promoting a sustainable economy, as well as environmentally friendly everyday actions.
The Group has established a standing objective to increase the quantity of cullet used in glass containers’ production and to increase the range of containers that can be made with recycled glass. Currently, 46.5% of the raw material used by Zignago Vetro consists of recycled glass, with evident advantages in terms of resource savings, energy savings, and lower CO2 emissions.
In 2017 Zignago Vetro was the first company to introduce cosmetics containers made with eco-friendly green glass: the “Deep Green Collection”. It offers: increased UV protection for the contents; manufacturing with up to 90% recycled glass; a reduction of up to -36% in CO2 emissions in production compared to the same item in flint glass.
Zignago Vetro uses electricity from renewable resources, specifically:
- from a biomass system;
- from photovoltaic panels for an overall surface area of 11,260 m2;
- from a steam turbine that recovers the heat contained in the furnace fumes to produce electricity.
The use of electricity from renewable sources has eliminated a total of 23,410 tons of CO2 emissions throughout 2019.
Zignago Vetro is constantly working to protect the hydrogeological balance and prevent any instability. In 2019 the amount of specific water consumptions per ton of glass produced was reduced by -33.9% compared to 2018. The Group is also involved in a number of activities to improve people’s awareness regarding plastic pollution in oceans and supports the program Friends of Glass created by Fevè.
Zignago Vetro is working on reducing CO2 emissions along the entire value chain: besides monitoring its own direct emissions of carbon dioxide (known as “Scope 1”), and indirect emissions caused by the production of electricity (“Scope 2” emissions) it is also developing its own methods to estimate other indirect emissions (“Scope 3” emissions due to transport, commuting, etc.). In 2019, specific emissions (Scope 1 + 2) of CO2 reduced by -5.7%.
Zignago Vetro has implemented multi-modal transport: it has identified rail transport as an alternative method to road transport as, besides being efficient, it noticeably reduces emissions.
The company is committed to the diffusion of eco-compatible processes and technologies capable of reducing the generation of wastes, as well as initiatives intended as incentives to establish the circular economy. A large part of the waste produced (overall 77.9%) is recycled.
Zignago Vetro supports Treedom: the platform that plants trees on behalf of their supporters and allows them to follow their tree’s growth online. An important initiative to help make the world a greener place, more sustainable and that contributes to the local needs.
